The protagonist of the series, Candy is a happy, optimistic young girl who, as a baby, was left at the doorstep of Pony's Home, an orphanage run by Miss Pony and Sister Mary. Years later, Candy is adopted by the Leegans, who are a wealthy family from Chicago. As an adult, she becomes a nurse. Eliza and Neal Leegan are pampered and spoiled-rotten brats who are theoretically Candy's adoptive brother and sister but, in practice, they love to make Candy's life a living hell. Fortunately, with Candy being as optimistic and persistent as she is, their evil schemes always end up giving her a chance to improve her life in one way or the other. Miss Pony is the owner of Pony's Home, the orphanage where Candy spends her early childhood years. Along with Sister Mary, Miss Pony takes care of several orphans who live in her home.
